Static vs Trailing Drawdown — What's the Difference?
Static Drawdown (FTMO Style)
Your maximum drawdown is calculated from your initial account balance. It never changes. If you have a $10,000 account with 10% max drawdown, your account can never fall below $9,000 — regardless of how high your balance gets.
This means profits do not increase your drawdown buffer. Used by FTMO, FundedNext, and most major firms.
Trailing Drawdown (Some Firms)
Your maximum drawdown is calculated from your highest ever balance. As your balance grows, the minimum floor rises with it.
If your $10,000 account peaks at $11,000 with 10% trailing drawdown, your floor rises to $9,900. Profits lock in a higher floor. Used by Apex Trader Funding and some futures firms.
